    Description

Offered for your consideration is a very unique WWII era theater-made fighting knife. Theater knives were made by the tens of thousands during times of war. They can span the spectrum from crude, rudimentary knives, to elaborate, high-quality knives. They were crafted by soldiers, generally in the theater of battle, and were made out necessity, to battle boredom, or simply as a hobby. They were generally crafted from materials available to soldiers in the field, although many of the more elaborate knives were made aboard ships in their well-equipped machine shops. This knife came from a huge (well over 750+) life-long collection of theater-made knives. While the exact provenance of most theater knives is usually impossible to determine (unless of course, they were signed or passed down as family heirlooms), these knives usually have a very distinctive design and appearance. I can usually identify the materials used for handle components, although I've not been able to identify the composition of the handle segments on this knife and I've not seen similar. They may be wood, although I don't think so.
The knife appears to have seen light use after it was crafted. It has not been buffed, polished, or altered and remains exactly as it was made. The blade finish looks as though the steel was likely cleaned/buffed at the time the knife was made.
This knife has a distinct and very unique appearance to complement its sturdy build.
The design is highly functional and it's well-suited for a wide range of common applications. The sturdy blade was ground from carbon steel and it has a long clip point for enhanced penetration. The surfaces are free of significant corrosion or pitting with just some scattered light pitting that was already on the steel when the blade was shaped. The full tang travels through the handle and can be seen peened in the center of the pommel. The blade looks as though it may have been sharpened a time or two, although I'm really not sure. The edge is free of any cracks, chips, or damage and it remains very nice with just a bit normal light wear. It remains somewhat sharp, although a quick touch-up would have it razor sharp in no time. The needle-sharp tip is intact and original with no breaks or bending. The spine is free of any dents, marring, or damage and it has never been pounded or batonned. The  guard was shaped from thick brass and shows excellent symmetry. It remains completely tight and it's free of any marring or damage with just a couple scattered light dings. The blade was nicely centered within the guard and the blade/guard junctions are clean. The handle is very unique and it was nicely done. It was crafted from alternating segments of black and brown material with a red center segment. The segments are separated by copper spacers and the handle appears to have a lacquered finish. The handle is free of any cracks, chips, degradation, or damage with little visible wear. There are no stains or discoloration aside from a bit of scattered verdigris from long-term contact with the leather sheath. This cleans of easily with just some warm, soapy water. All handle components remain solid and tight with no looseness or play.
The pommel was shaped from brass and it's free of any significant dents, gouges, marring, or damage with just a couple small scuffs/dings from use/handling as shown.
The blade is 5-1/2" and the knife measures just over 10" in overall length.
The leather belt sheath is the original and it appears to have been handcrafted for the knife. It displays some tooling as shown. The leather is free of any cuts, punctures or damage aside from a cut under the right belt loop and a small edge crack just below the cut. All stitching remains intact and tight.
If you're a collector and/or enthusiast of theater knives, this a very interesting and great-looking knife that's certainly one-of-a-kind.
A sturdy, and very unique theater knife!
