    Description

This lantern shade/reflector was made by N L Gilbert Metal Products Inc for Coleman/Thermos/SMP and other mil spec lanterns. Designed to be used in field hospitals to help reflect the light down to better illuminate operating rooms. They come in two pieces that are flat and when assembled form a cone shaped reflector. Made from the Korean war up through Vietnam. Slotted to fit over the lantern's bale which holds it in place.
I included a picture of a reflector made by Industrial Precision Products Inc to show what they look like when assembled and to show the difference.  The Gilbert shade is a lighter od green. The US medical insignia is larger.  The black paint is lighter.  The IPP reflectors are rare.  I'm happy to know they are now in the hands of people who appreciate them.  Uncle Sam sold them as war surplus for pennies on the dollar.  They spent most of the last 50 years on the upper floor of a hundred year old warehouse, waiting patiently to be able to fulfill the purpose for which they were imagined, designed and produced.  The opportunity has come and gone for them to illuminate the interior of a medical tent in a war zone somewhere in Korea or Vietnam. Display them proudly as part of the history of this great country and those that served in the US armed forces.
