Description
Original WWII E.G.W. Combat Knife measuring 11" overall with a blade length of 6". Very good condition, shows some age patina, wear, light scratches. Ricasso marked, E.G.W. Knife with obverse side marked, U.S.A. Waterman did not have any knives under US contract, but many WWII photos show U.S. Servicemen wearing these EGW Knives which were private purchase knives. There were 7 Variations of these knives, and this one appears like a cross between variation 2 and 3. Variation two has the wood handle with cut grooves, and two black spacers with a smooth spine on blade. Guard and pommel are shorter on Var. 2. Variation 3 shows the same type of wood handle, with a serrated top blade and has the correct length guard and pommel. So I call this one Variation 2A since it has the non-serrated blade, wood handle, and long guard and pommel. End of pommel shows correct lanyard ring. All is tight with no looseness. The leather sheath is correct and WWII and used for EGW variations 1-4.* Some unstitching on the right side of scabbard by throat along with that top rivet having come undone from the lower piece of leather. See photos.*U.S. and Allied Military Knives WWII, by Bill Walthers Bk II, Pgs 109-112
