Description
TheAmerican Civil War
(1861–1865) was the deadliest war in American history, resulting in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers and an undetermined number of civilian casualties. Victory for the North meant the end of the Confederacy and of slavery in the United States, and strengthened the role of the federal government.
Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a US military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
Long-term Union advantages in men and material were realized in 1864 when
Ulysses S. Grant
fought battles of attrition against Confederate commander
Robert E. Lee
who finally surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

Clarissa Harlowe "Clara" Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912) was a pioneer American teacher, nurse, and humanitarian. She is best remembered for organizing the
American Red Cross
.
"As a patriot, he had me serve my country with all I had, even with my life if need be; as the daughter of an accepted Mason, he had me seek and comfort the afflicted everywhere, and as a Christian he charged me to honor God and love all kind. "The door that nobody else will go in at, seems always to open widely for me."
--Clara Barton recalling the advice her father gave her on his death bed.
