People will continue to drive cars. Because they need them and because they provide the freedom of mobility.
It is well understood, however, that cars can be harmful to our world. And the answer to this problem, of course, is to build cleaner, safer, longer-lasting automobiles. At BMW, we have long recognized a responsibility to design automobiles that will remain
ecologically viable instruments in our world. Two outstanding results of this are shown here; the new 850i coupe and the 750iL sedan.
These automobiles include, among many other virtues, dual catalytic converters and sophisticated electronic engine management to produce power in a clean and efficient manner. (In fact, BMW's emission controls meet the levels required by the State ol California which are the most Stringent in the world)
Safety features include air bags, and our industry leading Automatic Stability Control system which provides drivers some
benefits of four wheel drive, yet in a more efficient two wheel drive configuration. And both have been designed with the recognition that longer-lasting automobiles use less of the world's valuable natural resources: Because they need to be replaced less frequently, we need to build fewer of them.
Another example is the new BMW plant at Regensburg. In its simplest terms, the Regensburg plant, with its efficient use of fuel and other natural elements, its recycling methods, its sensory friendliness to employees, its very design growing out of the landscape
without interfering with it, may well be a leading prototype for all such operations built anywhere in the world.
The automobile, in practical terms, is here to stay.
It should be reassuring to know that at BMW, we are working to make sure it will remain welcome on our planet.
